Marie Maynard Daly, a biochemist, was the first African American woman in the United States to earn a PhD in Chemistry, awarded by Columbia University in 1947. Daly made numerous contributions to the world’s current understanding of the metabolism and composition of the cell nucleus. She also developed programs to increase the number of minorities in medical schools and graduate science programs. Daly is an example of a woman who made incredible advances in science, but more importantly she defied societal norms, persevered through adversity and prejudice, and emphasized the importance of education.
